The captive lords of the Wangoni shortly before being executed at Songea on February 27th, 1906. Fr. Johannes took this picture. Most of the 48 captives asked to be baptised before the execution, among them Nkosi Mputa Gama (at the right end of the front row, wearing a kind of turban). During the following months he became an ardent defender for the local populace against the arbitrariness of the colonial rulers, until the governour demanded his dislocation.
