Likingo Power Station

Likingo Power Station is situated 25 km from Peramiho. The rivers Luhira and Mkingasi come together there and form a waterfall of 45 m. We use this natural fall to operate a power station yielding 500 kW. Two turbines and generators supply 250 kW each.

The electricity comes to Peramiho through an earth cable of 11kV. There it serves the hospital, the workshops, the school and the monastery.

A hydroelectric power plant has zero emission, that means no fossil fuels are being used and no climate changing gas is being emitted. The only other possibility to get electricity in a country where there is no reliable public network is running a generator on diesel. Such a generator is a climate killer and also expensive. Still on some days before the rainy season starts we are not able to operate the power plant for lack of water. On those days our diesel generator needs fuel worth 1000 €.
