St.Joseph's Mission Hospital

Peramiho hospital has about 17,000 in-patients per year. Nearly half of them suffer from Malaria, some 3,000 come to deliver a child. About 120,000 patients come for ambulant treatment.

Dr.Br.Ansgar Stüfe O.S.B. acts as medical director, Dr.Lemuel (Lemmy) Rugumyamheto as his deputy and Dr.Venance Mushi as doctor in charge. Since Br.Ansgar also is procurator of the missions for our congregation, responsibility largely rests with Dr.Lemmy.

When in 1901 the first missionary Benedictine sisters arrived in Peramiho, one nurse was among them. That was the beginning of sick-nursing in Peramiho - only three years after the arrival of the first missionaries. 1923 the first huts for in-patients were built. But it was only in 1949 when the first doctor came to Peramiho, Sr. Dr. Tetwigis Sailer O.S.B. and the hospital could be officially recognized.
