St.Joseph's Mission Hospital (continued)

Between 1980 and 1994 the hospital could be enlarged in three steps thanks to help from the German Catholic MISEREOR organisation.

Br.Dr. Ansgar Stuefe O.S.B. arrived in 1987 as the first monk at the hospital. Since 1901 the sick had been cared for nearly exclusively by the Tutzing Missionary Benedictine sisters. During his time as doctor in charge the number of employees (now some 300) and the number of beds (now 420) could be raised further.

Today the hospital especially stresses the importance of continuing training for the staff and support for rural health care in the surrounding settlements. Medical work in a poor country has never been easy. Procuring medicine and maintaining the technical equipment are challenging tasks. The large number of our patients, many of them from the neighbouring city of Songea, stresses the importance of our work for the people of our region.
