St. Joseph Hospital, Peramiho A Brief History, Part II

Hospital Part I      Leprosarium     St. Anna Health Center

1980-2000  These years see the erection of new buildings, expansion, renovation, increase in patient numbers, and improvement in health care methods initiated and guided by Brother Dr. Ansgar Stuefe, OSB. The hospital has a capacity of 420 beds. The Nurses' and midwives' Training School with 120 students offers a four-year course for training as laboratory attendants and has ten study places.

The Leprosarium at Morogoro is still under the care of the sisters and is associated with Peramiho Hospital. Due to improved medical treatment and better medicines many lepers can be healed, and the number of new leprosy cases decreased. However, due to Aids, the children's home associated with the leprosarium becomes home for more than 150 orphans starting with toddlers and caring for them through their school years.

Dr. Ansgar Stuefe, OSB, is entrusted to another field of responsibility in his religious congregation of Missionary Benedictine Fathers, and leaves Peramiho. The direct responsibilities of leadership in the hospital are given to Dr. Lemuel Rugumyamheto (Deputy Medical Director) and Dr. Venance Mushi (Doctor in Charge).
